Facebook friend Darren Viola posted some Christgau clips of 1977 live show previews of the B-52s and Fleshtones shows at Max’s, which are fun, but down in the comments was a link to this tune from 1980.

Never heard this album but I saw half a set Lester played at CB’s that was rockier than this. The music is pretty corny and so is his delivery. I can’t catch all the words but those I hear are good, which figures. He had a career in novelty hits cut short. Lester had a good soul but convinced himself that he didn’t have a soul at all, like many a talented existentialist before him. Norman Mailer, Truman Capote and Gore Vidal come to mind. They all hit a wall in their art. What they all were is great journalists: great eyes and a way with the truth, or the truth as they saw it.
