The Lovin’ Spoonful, “Do You Believe in Magic”

The first album I owned was the Lovin’ Spoonful’s first greatest hits album, so I’m captive. And I was a kid.

But what I’ve learned since, is that this was a tight band with pop ambitions but not a little bit of soul.

Excuse my golden oldie. Too good to be forgotten: https://youtu.be/R8ifTS5NEsI

  1. Lightweight reputation but these boys could play. They all cut their chops playing live and here they are definitely playing, and rocking. The girls are convinced; that’s all that matters;)

  2. I have no evidence that Lovin’ Spoonful didn’t play on their records and, honestly, a song as big as “Believe In Magic” probably would’ve been featured in the movie. However, Mamas & Papas were a Wrecking Crew band and were in the movie and they share a common thread.

  3. Creque Alley, baby. The M&P’s moved to LA and hooked up with the Wrecking Crew, the Spoonful stayed in New York. Between them they had a lot of hits, some of them lasting but not always the right ones. The Mamas & Papas are not my thing, but I think this is BY FAR their best song, killer chorus courtesy of Mama Cass:

  4. Ooh, got my fave Mamas & Papas tune Gene (how did you know?). Just the little tracking vocal of Cass echoing “canyon” still gets me.

As for the Spoonful, they were good and legit.

I bought the Magic single at Music City in Oakland right when it came out and remember playing it over and over on my grandparents GE portable stereo (much to my grandparents horror).
