Night Music: The Strokes, “Someday”

When we first heard the Strokes they sounded like guys glomming on to all that was already good about rock ‘n’ roll. But now, many years later, they sound a little like the last breath of fresh rock ‘n’ roll. I’m not sure what the real context is, today, but this was a band that always sounded like they were ready for pleasure. That is a very good quality.

  1. Funny, The Strokes had kind of the opposite effect on me – I thought they were really hot shit when I first got the album (early on, with the girl’s ass picture) and a year later I didn’t want to play it anymore. Could be they were ruined for me by all the copycats.

The beginning of this video looks like those silly beer commercials I watched all NFL season – “Drink our beer and you’ll be having a rollicking good-time party with the coolest of cool people.”

I would award the primary hope of modern rock ‘n’ roll to the Queens. Everything else for me is retro. But then again, we’ve firmly established that music has passed me by.
