Sad Happens, Music Helps

Sometimes things happen that make you want to lay down and listen to sad music. I have a few playlists for such occasions. I thought I’d share a few of my most comforting sad time songs.

Dear Prudence – The Beatles

Wild Horses – The Rolling Stones

Heart Cooks Brain – Modest Mouse

Once I Was – Tim Buckley

Pink Moon – Nick Drake

Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay – Otis Redding

The First Days of Spring – Noah and the Whale

Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon & Garfunkel

Asleep – The Smiths

  1. I never thought of having a set list for when I’m sad, although I used to listen to the Velvet Underground when I was depressed. Now I’m depressed too often to get solace from depression. But songs are like food I guess, and this one comforts me:

  2. Thanks Linds. Diane told me of the parting of your Frisbee mate, so I figured this might have prompted? Sympathies, GF.

I know this will wrankle Steve, but I put on Joni Mitchell’s “Court and Spark” (also know to me as “music to slit your wrists by”) when I feel blue.”

Though I gotta admit I love your choices (especially The Smiths).

  3. I would slit my wrists to Joni Mitchell for different reasons.

Anyway, “David Comes To Life” by Fucked Up was my soundtrack to my marriage falling apart before my eyes in late 2011. It’s in my all-time Top 50 yet I have a difficult time listening to it anymore.

    Boo fucking hoo, I guess.

By the way Lindsay, I must apologize. Whenever you post something I imagine Lawr as a girl, with pigtails and a cotton summer dress. Again, my sincere apologies.

  4. Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay is the best melancholy song ever. No contest.

For sadness and depression I battle between indulging the feeling and fighting it. But what I avoid are depressives. Beck sucks when you’re sad, even the good stuff. Joni Mitchell may induce wrist slitting in some, but she’s always about two steps ahead of me (at least) emotionally.

Which gives me an idea for tomorrow’s Breakfast Blend.

  5. Thanks Steve, I suppose I am a bit defensive about my music taste. And I’m used to being complimented on it from my friends rather than criticized by old(er) men. I am sorry. however, that you get that image of Lawr whenever I post something. Can’t be an easy one to get out of the old noggin.
Gene that Stones song is great too. Though that Fucked Up song does not comfort me in the slightest.
